The Challenge of Self-Care When Life Gets Busy
It’s easy to make time for ourselves when we have plenty of free time. But what happens when life gets busy and we feel like we barely have time to take a breath?
When we’re juggling full schedules and never-ending checklists, it can feel impossible to find a moment to pause. Self-care is often the first thing to be pushed aside when life becomes full, even though that’s when we need it most.
Self-Care: More Than a Trend
Self-care has become a trending topic that can be interpreted in different ways. At its core, it’s making space to recharge and take care of your wellbeing, both mentally and physically.
Self-care will look different for everyone, and in different seasons of life. What matters most is finding what makes you feel good, and treating yourself with the same care and compassion you would offer someone you love.
The Truth About Not Having Time for Self-Care
Here’s the catch: the days you feel like you don’t have a moment to spare are the days you need it most.
That doesn’t mean you need hours for an extensive workout, luxurious bath, or perfect morning routine. When our obligations start to pile up, it can feel like every second we have could be used to chip away at the never-ending to-dos. But setting aside even five minutes to center yourself can shift how you feel throughout the day.
We often have more time than we think. Even on the busiest days, it’s worth noticing how we’re spending the small windows of time we do have. Do you scroll for ten minutes between tasks? That’s not necessarily bad, but it may be a space where a more restorative form of self-care could fit.
Quick Self-Care Practices for Busy Days
What leaves you feeling energized, refocused, inspired, or grounded? Here are a few self-care practices to try when time is limited:
10-Minute Movement
You may not have time for a full class or gym session, but even a few minutes of stretching, walking, or moving your body can shift your mood and energy.
5-Minute Meditation
A short meditation or a few deep, intentional breaths can calm your nervous system and help you feel more present.
Mindfulness in Everyday Tasks
Bring presence into your daily routines, like brushing your teeth or showering, and use them as opportunities to slow down and reconnect with yourself. More on this here: Finding Mindfulness in Daily Life
Use Transitions as Mini Resets
Take a moment to pause between meetings, errands, or tasks. Adding brief check-ins to ground yourself on busy days. Read more on this here: Embracing Transitions in Your Day
Schedule It with Intention
Add short blocks of self-care to your calendar the way you would any other priority. Whether it’s a short walk, a 5-minute meditation, or a fun activity to look forward to, planning ahead makes it more likely to happen.
Make Yourself a Priority Without Guilt
Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s what enables us to move through life with more clarity, patience, and presence. You can’t pour from an empty cup.
Taking time, however short, to recharge can improve our productivity, mental health, and ability to show up in our lives for the ones we love.
Be Gentle with Yourself When You Can’t Do It All
Part of self-care is acknowledging the reality: we can’t do everything.
There are days when I hit the ground running from the moment I awake, rushing through to-dos and barely stopping to catch my breath, let alone five minutes for self-care. Let go of the pressure to do it perfectly, and be gentle with yourself when you don’t get to everything you hoped to. Grace is a form of self-care, too.
When life feels especially busy, get clear on what truly matters. Being hard on yourself only turns self-care into another stressful “have-to” instead of something that supports you.
Prioritize What Matters Most in Busy Seasons
I recently had a friend visiting for two weeks. On top of my full-time job and day-to-day responsibilities, I may not have gotten to everything on my to-do list or my usual forms of self-care. But taking a few moments here and there, even ten minutes of intentional presence in the shower, allowed me to show up for my friend and enjoy the time we had together.
If you’re in a busy season, know that you don’t have to do it all, but you can still care for yourself in small ways.
Self-Care as a Daily Intention
Self-care doesn’t have to mean layering extensive routines on top of your already overwhelming schedule. It’s about tuning in to what you need each day and making time for what truly supports your wellbeing.
Even on the busiest days, a little bit of self-care goes a long way. Make yourself a priority, treat yourself with kindness, and remember: we’re worth the time and care we so often give to others.

Great reminder that self-care is an essential activity. It’s not selfish. It is not self-centered. It is a centering activity that lowers my stress as well as those around me. Thanks and Namaste. – Yogi Joe

Great suggestions Michelle. This is so helpful in calming stress. I’ve been scheduling 10 minute mantra meditations and yoga stretches daily for a couple years and it has been very helpful in alleviating my anxiety and stress. I also try to use deep calming breaths when stress arises.
Thank you so much for sharing! I love that you’ve created such a supportive daily routine. Those small, consistent practices really do make a difference.
